Bessie A. Falada, 93, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at the Oakwood Care Facility in Clear Lake.

The Rev. John Hemann celebrated the Mass of Christian Burial and conducted the funeral and burial services Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 10:30 a.m., at St Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan.

She was buried at St John's Cemetery, Duncan. The Cataldo Funeral Home of Garner was in charge of arrangements.

Pall bearers were Wayne Kudej, Donald Schmitt, Vern Schmitt, Tom Zrostlik, Kenneth Formanek, Don Hrubes, Paul TerBeck and Allan Formanek in the absence of Roger Miles. Bob Formanek was the usher.

The honorary pall bearers were Bob Kudej, Jerome Formanek, Bernard Zeman, Bill Miles, Francis Falada, John Buzicky and Joe Buzicky.

Bill and Delores Miles placed the pall on the coffin. Anton Trea was the lector.

The organist, Mary Kopacek, accompanied soloist Louise Zrostik.

Charlotte Olson and Joan Gillam brought the offertory gifts to the altar. Erma Formanek and Irene Schmitt were the communion ministers.

Bessie (Formanek) Falada, the daughter of Joseph F. and Anna (Landa) Formanek, was born Dec. 17, 1905, on a farm near Duncan.

She attended rural schools of Garfield Township in Hancock County. She assisted with the family farming.

Bessie was married to Peter Falada Nov. 28, 1933 at St. Wenceslaus Church, Duncan. Together they owned and operated the Duncan General Store for 35 years.

In 1968 they retired in Forest City. After her husband's death in 1992, Bessie moved to the Prairie View Apartments in Garner. Due to ill health, she moved to the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake Feb. 27, 1996.

Bessie enjoyed baking, playing cards, entertaining family and friends, and singing and acting in Czech plays.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Margaret Formanek of Des Moines, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Peter, who died April 7, 1992; her sisters, Mary Rokos, Ida Zeman, Estella Falada, Christina Formanek, Anna Schmitt, Jessie Formanek, Josephine Formanek and a sister in infancy; and two brothers Frank Formanek and Joe E. Formanek.

The mass and burial services of their aunt, Bessie Falada, were attended by Dr. Donald and Mrs. Mary Ann Schmitt of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Vern and Irene Schmitt.
