Services held Tuesday for Emil Damm Sr.

Emil Johannes Kofoed Damm, a native of Denmark who spent the majority of his life in the Forest City and Crystal Lake areas, died Saturday at his home in Forest City. He was 77 years old.

A son of Johannes and Cecilie (Kofoed) Damm, he was born Feb. 29, 1896 in RonneBronholm, Denmark. He received his education in Denmark prior to coming to the United States in 1914. Mr. Damm settled first at Forest City, and then moved to Crystal Lake where he operated a dray line and later a meat market.

Mr. Damm was married to Mary Madson Dec. 17, 1924, in her parents' home near Britt. The family lived in the Crystal Lake area until 1946 when they moved to Forest City. Mr. Damm worked for the Forest City locker until his retirement in 1961.

During World War I, Mr. Damm served with the U.S. Army in France. He was a lifetime member of the Crystal Lake American Legion post, a member of the Winnebago county Barraks of World War I Veterans, and a member of the Forest City United Methodist church.

Survivors include a daughter, Eva Damm of Waverly, and a son, Emil Jr. Damm of Forest City. He is also survived by four grandchildren and one sister, Miss Eva Damm of RonneBornholm, Denmark. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and his wife, who died Sept. 29, 1969.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist church in Forest City. The Rev. B. Gordon Packard officiated and burial was in Madison township cemetery. Music was provided by Mrs. Robert Goranson and Mrs. Franklin Bienert.

Casket bearers were Clifford Caltvedt, Craig Manson, Merle Mikkelson, Merle Muhm, Vincent Mulert and Russell Swanson.

Honorary bearers were Palmer Durby, R. W. Branstad, Albert Berger, George Meinecke, Oliver Tweeten, Selmer Salveson, Alfred Moe, Peter Larson, Arthur Holtan and Rex Austin.

Graveside rites were conducted by members of Forest City American Legion Post No. 121. Olson-Petersen funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
