Calvin "Joe" Schaefer
1924-1990

Services for Calvin "Joe" Schaefer, 66, of Garner, who died Friday, Dec. 28, 1990 at his home in Garner were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 31 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Rev. Fr. Marvin Bries as celebrant. Joe Schaefer was lector.

Mrs. Ronald Kumsher, organist, accompanied the St. Boniface Choir. Ushers were Elmer Urich and Robert Kral.

Casket bearers were Jamie Lemke, Ben Lemke, Jason Hejlik, Bob Sniezek, Duane Severson and L. E. "Bud" Schleusner.

Burial was in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Garner. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Garner Veteran's Ceremonial Unit.

A parish Scriptural Wake Service and Knight's of Columbus rosary were held Sunday evening at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.

Calvin "Joe" Schaefer, the son of Roy Irwin and Cora May (Gates) Schaefer, was born June 19, 1924 on a farm near Klemme. He attended the rural schools of Liberty Township and then high school in Klemme. From November 5, 1942, until January 27, 1946, he served his country in the U. S. Navy in the Pacific Theater. After the service, he worked for Yohn Ready-Mix for two years.

November 25, 1948, he married Mildred Stupka at St. James Catholic Church in Forest City. He worked for the E. G. Greiman Construction Company for 19 years. Joe was self-employed in the J & B Construction Company from 1964 until 1977. For the past 13 years, he worked at Iowa Mold Tooling Company in the Customer Service Department; retiring the first of May this year.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, St. Boniface Men's Society, the Knight's of Columbus, the Garner American Legion, the Veteran's Ceremonial Unit and the V.F.W. of which he was current Commander.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, of Garner; his children, Mrs. Sandra Hejlik and her husband, Dennis of Springfield, VA, and their children, Jason and Jill, Mrs. Linda Lemke and her husband, Gary of Casper, WY, and their children, Jamie and Ben, Janelle Luppen of Denver, CO, Joanne Schaefer of Kannapolis, NC, Joe Schaefer and his wife, Anne of Littleton, CO and their son, Michael and Greg Schaefer of Garner; four sisters, Mrs. Violet Weaver and her husband, Emory of Garner, Mrs. Rose Trca and her husband, Dennis of Garner, Mrs. Daisy Barz of Kanawha, Mrs. Iris Rayhons of Sioux City; and two brothers, Merle Schaefer of Los Angeles, CA and Eugene Schaefer and his wife, Gloria of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald J. Schaefer.
