Services for Mrs. Mae Smith, 78, of Woden, who died Sunday, September 13, 1987 at North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City, were held 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 16 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Woden with Rev. Keith Klemm as officiant.

Mrs. John Kurtzleben served as organist. Ushers were James Buns and Calvin Kurtzleben.

Casket bearers were grandsons Douglas Smith, Dennis Smith, Jr., Darrin Smith, Dana Smith, Danny Smith, David Smith and Darren Smith.

Burial was in Bingham Township Cemetery in Woden. Visitation was held at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Woden.

Mrs. Mae Ionia Smith, the daughter of Vino and Dena (Penning) Heitland was born October 24, 1908 on a farm south of Buffalo Center. After attending the rural schools of Grant Township she worked as a housekeeper for several families and then as a telephone operator in Woden.

January 1, 1932, she was married to Ralph Martin Smith at Immanuel Lutheran Church northwest of Woden. They farmed in the Woden area until 1977, when they retired from active farming. In 1970, they moved into Woden.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church Women.

She is survived by her children, Donald and his wife, Arlene, of Tulsa, Okla., Roger and his wife, Patricia, of Perry, Darwin and his wife, Cheryl, of Dubuque and Dennis and his wife, Linda, of Woden; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her brother, Anton Heitland and his wife, Margaret, of Rush City, Minn., and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Gladys Heitland and her sister, Mrs. Alice Cline.
