Services for Robert "Bob" Whitehurst, 60, Algona, who died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center, were held Monday, Jan. 5, 10:30 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Algona with Pastor Daniel Mangler officiating.

Music was provided by organist, Kristie Brown, who accompanied soloist, Jamie Simpson, and the congregation hymns.

Honorary casket bearers was the accounting department of Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Company.

Active bearers were Scott Lage, Tom Goodrich, Dan Carter, Dan Peterson, Ed Berg, Montie Redenius, Tom Claude and Chris Bronk.

Burial was at the Concord Township Cemetery, Garner, with Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Military graveside rites were conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Robert "Bob" Whitehurst, the son of John and Marie Larsen Whitehurst, was born June 8, 1937, in rural Hancock County, north of Britt. He began his education in rural schools near Britt, attended grade school in Ventura and graduated in 1954 from Garner High School. He joined the United States Marine Corps, attained the rank of Sergeant, and served from 1955 to 1959. Following his discharge, he returned to the Garner area in 1960 and worked for Butz Hatchery in Garner for four years.

November 23, 1963, he married Sandra K. Sloter in Corwith. Bob attended Hamilton Business College and graduated in 1965 in accounting. He began working for Allied Mills, Inc. in Omaha until 1969. They were transferred to St. Joseph, MO, where he worked in the feed division of Allied Mills. He continued his education through night school and graduated from Missouri Western State College in 1974, again in accounting. In October of that year, they were transferred to the pet food division in Peoria, IL. In the fall of 1977, they transferred to Dalhart, TX, to the cattle feeding division.

In 1980, Bob became employed with Cactus Feeders of Dumas, TX. In 1985, they moved back to Iowa and on January 2, 1986, Bob began working for Druggists Mutual Insurance Company in Algona. He became Assistant Secretary of Accounting in the firm.

Bob was a member of First Lutheran Church of Algona where he participated in the Men's Fellowship Breakfast and other church functions, was a former member of the Lions Club and was active with the Girl Scout program. Bob enjoyed wild life, walking, flowers and working in his yard. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing cards, roller skating, dancing, reading books and the quiet times. He also enjoyed "acting" in the community theater.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra of Algona, one daughter, Lori Lynn Boyken and her husband, Dan of Mason City; two granddaughters, McKenna and Madison Boyken; three brothers, Richard Whitehurst and his wife, Jeanette of Garner, Reubin "Butch" Whitehurst and his wife, Terri of Garner, and Rollin Whitehurst and his wife, Madonna of Thief River Falls, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
