Charles Thomas

Services were held Wednesday, June 16, 1993, for Charles E. Thomas, 53, who passed away, Saturday, June 12, 1993 at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, IA., at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake Iowa with Rev. Ken Suetterlin and Robert S. Crandell officiating.

Music was provided by organist, Lisa Sonius who accompanied soloist, Eloise Haugland.

Ushers were Jim Kirshbaum and Shane Hobbs.

Honorary Casketbearers were Buck Kennedy, Lynn Howeison, Bob Singleton, Julie Bell, Donna Maschoff, and Lisa Steffen.

Active Casketbearers were Steve Bell, Dean Maschoff, Bryce Juhl, Mike Kadlecik, Brian Nielsen, and Jim Steffen.

Interment was in the Crystal Lake Township Cemetery in Crystal Lake, Iowa. Services under the direction of the Ewing Funeral Home.

Charles was born April 15, 1940, in Ottumwa, Iowa. The son of Walter and Edith A. Leeling Thomas. He attended and graduated from Ottumwa High School and also attended college in Missouri.

He was united in marriage on October 30, 1971 to Lois Jennings in Greene, Iowa. The couple made their home in Osage until 1973, when they moved to Des Moines. Charles was employed by various Mechanical Engineering Companies, such as the Elevator Contractors Company in Des Moines. In 1983 they moved to Crystal Lake, where he owned and operated the CL Hardware Store. Due to ill health he retired in 1985.

He was a member of the Crystal Lake Fire Department and served as past Fire Chief, also past president of the Crystal Lake Emergency Medical Services. He was active in various community activities.

Survivors include his wife, Lois M. Thomas of Crystal Lake, IA; two sons: Richard and his wife, Karen Thomas of Cary, N.C.; Kenneth and his wife, Ruth of Austin, MN; four daughters: Cindy and her husband, Duane Caroon of Hibbing, MN; Anne and her husband, Greg Brandt of Woden, IA, Sandy and her husband, Matt Weisen of Salt Point, NY: Tammy and her husband, Terry Blum of Bertrand, NE; his parents: Walter and Edith Thomas of Ottumwa, IA, two sisters, Ann and her husband, Keith Kropf of Ottumwa, IA; Norma Jean Van Den Huvel of Ankeny, IA; ten grandchildren, and several nephews and a niece.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
