Services for John Mikkelson, 56, who died Friday, March 14, 1997, at his home in Dubois, WY, were held Wednesday, March 19, 1:30 p.m., at the Upper Flat Evangelical Free Church. Britt, with Rev. Ted Henderson officiating.

Music was provided by organist, Mrs. Ted Henderson, who accompanied soloist, Capt. John C. Mikkelson. Ushers were Nels Jensen and Joe Korsa.

Casket bearers were members of the United States Marines.

Burial was at the Crystal Lake Cemetery, Crystal Lake, with Ewing Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

John Lonning Mikkelson, the son of Joseph and Mildred Lonning Mikkelson, was born October 12, 1940, in Britt. He was baptized and confirmed at the Upper Flat Evangelical Free Church, where he also attended Sunday School and was a member until he moved elsewhere. John attended rural school in Crystal Township and graduated in 1958 from the Britt High School. He then attended Iowa State University on a Navy/Marine Corps Scholarship, graduating in May of 1962.

Upon graduation, he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Marine Corps. John served his country with distinction for 27 years, with many command and staff assignments in the U.S. and overseas. He served two tours of duty in the Vietnam Theater earning the Bronze Star with Combat V. John retired from the Marines in 1989 with the rank of Colonel.

John was united in marriage to Shirley McNeese in 1968. Two sons were born to them, Joseph and Steven. John married Melinda Kidwell in 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Melinda; two sons, Joseph and Steven, both of Lynchburg, VA; two step-sons, Steven Kidwell of Guam and Shane Kidwell of Danville, VA; a step-daughter, Stephanie Allen of Marydel, MD; his parents, Joseph and Mildred Mikkelson of Britt; two brothers, Philip Mikkelson and his wife, Christine of McLeod, MT, and Dan Mikkelson and his wife, Christine of Dover, DE: and one sister, Mona Furnberg and her husband, Carlton of Livermore, CA.
