Rites for Palmer Durby scheduled for Thursday

Palmer Durby, 77, a Forest City resident who had farmed for many years in Winnebago and Hancock counties, died Monday evening at Forest City municipal hospital.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. this Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran church. The Rev. Owen Gangstead will officiate, and burial will be in Madison township cemetery. Olson-Petersen funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

A son of Peter and Maren (Borvick) Durby. Mr. Durby was born June 3, 1896, at Roland, Iowa. He was a veteran of World War I, and on Sept. 24, 1919 married Nettie Rogenehaugh at Story City.

Following their marriage, the couple moved to this area and made their home on farms in Hancock and Winnebago counties before retiring and moving to Forest City in 1960.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church, Winnebago county Barracks of World War I Veterans, the Thompson Veterans of Foreign Wars and Forest City American Legion Post 121.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Merle of Leland, Marlo of Lake Mills and John of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Mrs. Elbert (Dorothy) Guhl of Jewell and Mrs. Dean (Ruby) Farland of Thompson; and 22 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mr. Durby is also survived by two brothers, Lawrence of Stanhope and Ben of Roland; and five sisters, Mrs. Bernice Caltvedt of Roland, Mrs. Stella Nassen of Story City, Mrs. Lydia Sansgaard of Story City, Mrs. John (Palma) Beaty of Marshalltown and Mrs. Victor (Ruth) Duea of Roland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren.
