Lyda DeWaard of Woden dies; rites Friday

Funeral services for Mrs. Lyda DeWaard, 84, longtime Woden area resident, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Woden Christian Reformed Church south west of Woden. Rev. Henry P. Baak, church pastor will officiate and burial will be in the family lot in the Christian Reformed Cemetery. A family prayer service will be held at the Grupe Funeral Home in Britt at 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. DeWaard entered into rest, Tuesday morning, March 9 at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, where she had been a patient for the past two months. She attained the age of 84 years, 5 months and 4 days.

Lyda Vreeman DeWaard was born in Phillips County, Kansas, on October 5, 1886, the daughter of Hermanus and Elise TerMaat Vreeman. In her youth she made profession of her faith in the Reformed Church at Luctor, Kansas. On April 16, 1912, she was united in marriage with John DeWaard at Luctor, Kansas and to this union were born two daughters and six sons. In 1921, the family moved from Kansas to a farm in Wright County, Iowa, where they were members of the Wright Christian Reformed Church. In, 1934 they moved to a farm home south of Woden, where Mr. DeWaard died on Dec. 24, 1943. In 1949, Mrs. DeWaard retired to her home in Woden where she lived until her death. Her entire life was centered in her church, and in her family, and she was a faithful member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church and the church Ladies Aid.

Surviving are two daughters, Elise, Mrs. John Miller of Britt, Sereina, Mrs. A. J. Holleman of Hancock, Minn.; five sons, Adrian and Jacob of Woden; Manus and Gerrit of Wesley; and Henry of Kanawha. Also surviving 22 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one sister, Minnie, Mrs. Charles Jensma of Prairie View, Kansas and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son and one grandson, who both died in infancy, her parents and three sisters and four brothers.
