An Old Settler and Friend Departed

David Hillary, son of Thomas and Faith Hillary, was born in Yorkshire, England, Sept. 7, 1846, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Marshall Barge, January 21, 1926, at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 14 days.

He came to America with his parents in1848 and located at Hazel Green, Wisconsin, where he lived on a farm until he joined the army at the age of 17, becoming a member of Co. C 5th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, serving about two years, after which he spent several years in California and other western states returning to Shullsburg, Wisconsin in 1880.

In 1882 he was married to Henrietta Osborne of that place and in 1889 they came to Corwith where Mr. Hillary entered the barber business and conducted a shop until about ten years ago.

He was a member of the G.A.R., a charter member of the Eastern Star, a Mason, an I.O.O.F. and a K. of P. He was well liked by the members of all these orders.

He was baptized in infancy in the Episcopal church, and in the year 1893, under the pastorate of Rev. #-# Thompson, connected himself with the #-# church of this place. Mr. Hillary was a good father, a kind husband and a splendid citizen. We can but honor those men who gave to this generation a united nation, and tough it took the blood of brave men to cement it together, it was a noble sacrifice.

He leaves a wife and four children, R. D. Hillary, of Sprit Lake, Iowa; M. T. Hillary, Long Beach, California; Mrs. A. W. Parsons of Maynard, Ia. and Mrs. Marshall Badge of Decorah, Iowa and six grandsons.

Mr. Hillary had been a resident of Corwith for the past 37 years and was widely and favorably known and universally loved and respected by all his friends and neighbors. He had a cheerful disposition and a happy and pleasant greeting for all with whom he came in contact.
