Henry A. Bates one of the respected and highly honored old settlers of North Hancock county passed away at his home in Madison township Saturday July 31, 1909.

He had been in poor health for a couple of years when he was gored by a mad bull. He has never recovered from the ordeal.

Henry A. Bates was born in Massachusetts in 1843 and was in his 66th year when he died.

When thirteen he moved with his parents to Wisconsin. In 1862 he enlisted in the 23rd regiment, Wisconsin volunteer Company H, and served three years. He participated in the battles of Vicksburg, Champion Hill, Port Gibson, Black River Bridge, Jackson, Arkansas Port, Mobile and many other.

Then he returned to Wisconsin and in 1867 moved to Iowa settling in Hancock on a quarter section in Madison township in the seventies.

He is survived by four maiden sisters.

Mr. Bates was an honest industrious honest man and beloved by all. The roll call came to him and found him ready.
