Winifred Gilbert Passed Away At Cedar Falls Sat.
Funeral Rites Held At Home Of Parents In Garner And Burial Made Here
The Peter Gilbert family of Garner was bereaved for the second time in less than five weeks when word was received here Saturday of the death that morning of Miss Winifred Mae Gilbert, For the past 13 years an instructor in natural sciences at Iowa State Teachers college at Cedar Falls.
Miss Gilbert had been in failing health the past several months, and her condition was such that she was unable to come here May 9, when her brother, L. L. Gilbert, was killed in a tractor accident at his farm north of Garner.
Funeral rites were held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning at Cedar Falls, and the body was then brought to Garner for burial. Preceding graveside services at Concord cemetery, a short service was held at the home of Miss Gilbert's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gilbert,with the Rev. F. L. Henry of Cedar Falls officiating.
Pallbearers were Carl O. Roe, J. N. Sprole, Fred Grell, Carl H. Schneider, Charles Merten and Don Roe.
Miss Gilbert was born at Garner April 3, 1892, and passed away June 17, 1939. She devoted her life to teaching and rose to an enviable rank in her chosen profession.
After winning her doctor's degree, she taught at Iowa State Teachers college, and while there she was active in the Iowa Ornithological union, an organization of bird lovers, and had served as secretary and vice president of the state group.
Left to mourn her untimely passing are her parents, four brothers, Charles of Preston, Minn; Harold, William and James, all of Garner; one sister, Miss Martha Gilbert, who taught at Sheffield, as well as many more distant relatives and a host of friends.
