1926-2001

Dean E. McAfee, 75, of Garner died Friday, December 28, 2001, at his home.

Memorial services for Mr. McAfee will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, January 5, 2002, at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner. The Rev. Fr. Michael Schueller will officiate.

Interment will be in the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Dean Edwin McAfee, the son of Lawrence and Wilhelmina (Regennitter) McAfee, was born July 28, 1926, at Lisbon. He attended school in Geneva and Hampton. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July of 1944, serving in the CBMU #555 where he spent time in Panama, Nicaragua and both sides of the Panama Canal Zone at Balboa and Coco Solo.

After his discharge in July of 1946, he moved to Garner where he worked for Duesenberg Construction in the summers and Garner Motor Sales in the winters for seven years and from 1952 to 1954 at the Bancroft Deitering Garage.

On April 30, 1955, Dean McAfee married Carol A. Neitzel at the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Whittemore. The couple lived in Garner where he was employed at Garner Motor Sales for 18 years full time, Bock Transport from 1966 to 1970 and Ziesmer Truck line from 1970 to 1974. He was self employed as a mechanic from 1974 to 1978, worked at IMT from 1978 to 1995 and Stellar Industries until 2001. During his time at IMT he traveled to China, Mongolia, Sweden, Mali, Africa and throughout the United States, which were the highlights of his work years.

Dean was a life member of the Edwin Jante VFW Post #5515 and Gifford Olson American Legion Post #256.

He is survived by his wife, Carol of Garner; five children, Tim McAfee and wife, Jan of Overland Park, Kansas, Tom McAfee of Colleyville, Texas, Terry McAfee and wife, Stacy of Sacramento, California, Becky Hejlik and husband, John of Britt and Brenda Swaim and husband, Chuck of Ames; nine grandchildren, Andrea Hejlik, Allison Hejlik, Amber Hejlik, Matthew Swaim, Jessica Swaim, Sean McAfee, Seamus McAfee, Nicholas McAfee and Alexander McAfee.

Also surviving are two brothers, Don McAfee and wife, Shirley of Mason City and Dale McAfee and wife, Theony of Cheyenne, Wyoming; three sisters, Wilma Mordhorst and husband, Al of Arkansas, Audrey Anderson and husband, Robert of Ankeny and Margaret Baldridge of Centralia, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Shannon McAfee in 1994; five brothers, LeRoy, Clark, Wilbert and infants, Lawrence and Russell; and two sisters, Iva Myers and Carol Elphic.
