Helma Bell Proper

Funeral services were held Jan. 13, at the United Methodist Church in Goodell for Helma Bell Proper, 69, who died Jan. 10 at Belmond Hospital. Rev. Dora Campbell and Rev. Donald Campbell officiated. Burial was in Amsterdam Cemetery. Fulton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Helma was born Jan. 15, 1908 at Goodell to Thomas and Mabel Smith Burgess. She attended Goodell High School and Teachers College at Cedar Falls. She was a member of the United Methodist church. She married Leon Proper at Garner in 1930.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother. Survivors include one brother; Joseph Burgess of Goodell; two sisters: Ina Mae (Mrs. Paul) Halfpop and Betty (Mrs. Hauko) Barkema both of Belmond; and one step daughter: Nona (Mrs. George) Lane of Albia.

Casket bearers were Keith Barkema, Randall Barkema, Mark Barkema, Russell Barkema, Dean Burgess and Bernard Halfpop.
