Newgard [Newgord] Services At Goodell

Former Belmond Man Is Summoned

Harry Maurice Newgard [Newgord], son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Newgard [Newgord], was born March 22, 1885 at Ackley, Iowa. Later he moved with his parents to Bradgate and also lived at Pequot, Minn. The Newgards then moved to Belmond and Harry was graduated from Belmond high school with the class of 1904. He attended the University of Iowa and later homesteaded in Canada.

While there, he enlisted in the Canadian army and spent several months in France, fighting in the World War. Coming from France he returned to Canada, later coming to Clear Lake, where he joined the lumber yards. In 1924, he was transferred to Goodell as manager of the Woodford Wheeler Lumber company.

In February 1927, he was united in marriage to Alva Matson of Goodell at Garner. To this union were born two children, Mildred Marie and Noel.

In 1935, his health began to fail. Resigning his position, he entered Mayo clinic and submitted to a serious operation for brain tumor. For the past two months he has been bedfast. Death came at 5 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 11 at his home in Goodell.

For years, Mr. Newgard served as church choir director and financial secretary of the church. He was also Boy Scout master.

He is survived by his wife, two children, Mildred, age 10 and Noel, 5; his mother and a brother, Lloyd of Belmond, three sisters, Mrs. Ada Fitts of Marshall, Minn., Mrs. Gaye Barth of Boone and Mrs. Maude Edwards of Eagle Grove. His father died in 1911.

Widely attended funeral services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the U.B. Church with the Rev. Dye officiating. The mixed choir, which he had requested, and three favorite hymns, "Under His Wings," "Hide Me," and "Face To Face." Pallbearers were ex-service men, Robert McNutt, Earl Ruka, Harry Ruka, Clifford Estel, Ralph Hofer and James Rowen of Clarion. The Belmond American Legion post stood guard at the services and taps were sounded by his old comrade, Mr. Benson of Belmond.

Out of town friends and relatives who attended the services included his mother and sisters, Mrs. E. E. Stacy of Indianapolis, Mr. and Mrs. Tauge Matson and Martha of Iowa Falls, Mr. Barth, Sr., of Greene, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Peterson of Hampton, Leo Finn of Bancroft, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Kligore, Mrs. Schneider of Klemme, Mr. and Mrs. Finske, Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Pearson of Blue Earth, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Knute Larson, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Olson and Mr. and Mrs. Pete Benson of Kanawha, C. O. Fitts of Marshall, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Johnson of Latimer, Herbert Blake of Bradgate, Mr. and Mrs. Laurel of Worster, Ia, E. J. Thompson of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Tom Jollisse of Bradgate, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lovrien of Eagle Grove, Prof. and Mrs. Knowells of Gilmore City, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Nelson of Mason City and John Bohning of Clear Lake.
