Emma Maitland

Thornton - Mrs. Emma Maitland, 90, died Wednesday at a Mason City hospital.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Thornton Methodist Church. The Rev. George Brighton and the Rev. Kenneth Fogleman will officiate. Burial will be in Amsterdam Cemetery, Goodell with Wartnaby-Grarup Funeral Home in charge.

Surviving are a son, Tom, Chester; three daughters, Mrs. Lourane Crooks, Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Emma C. Gehrt, Gilmore City; Mrs. Adah B. Peterson, Sioux City; two sisters, Anna Brogan, Thornton; Mrs. Ida Courtray, Hampton; a brother, Raymond Brogan, Iowa Falls.

Maitland funeral held at Thornton

Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Maitland, 90, a former Goodell resident, were held Friday of last week in the Methodist church at Thornton. Rev. George Brighton, assisted by Rev. Kenneth Fogelman of Evansdale, officiated. Burial was in Amsterdam cemetery near Goodell.

Pallbearers were Dale Gehrt, Doyle Livasy, John S. Peterson and Lawrence, Roger and James Maitland, grandsons of the deceased.

Emma Braga was born Oct. 25, 1872, at South Elgin, Ill., the daughter of Matt and Emma Braga. She moved with her parents to Meservey while a child and lived on the farm now owned by Ralph James.

She was married to Thomas L. Maitland and resided in Old Amsterdam and in Goodell. Later they moved to Rolfe, where her husband died in 1948. Her home has been in Thornton for the past eight years.

Surviving are a son, Thomas, of Chester; and three daughters - Mrs. Emma Gehrt of Gilmore City, Mrs. Lora Crook of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Adah Peterson of Sioux City.

Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Anna Brogan of Thornton and Mrs. Ida Courtney of Hampton; a brother, I. F. Braga, Iowa Falls; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Matt and Abner; three daughters, Cora, Hazel and Mary Maitland; one brother and a sister.
