Oscar E. Johnson rites on Tuesday

Oscar E. Johnson, 74, state senator and representative, and former mayor of Kanawha, died of a heart attack Saturday while on vacation near Cloquet, Minn.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Kanawha Lutheran Church. The Rev. Bernard Oebser officiated. Burial was at Amsterdam Township cemetery with Carter Funeral Home in charge.

Born March 22, 1895, at Dayton, Iowa, he was the son of August and Emily Johnson. He was graduated from Dayton High School in 1912 and from the Highland Park School in Pharmacy in Des Moines in 1915.

He was married to Nora Nelson in Garner Dec 29, 1937. He had served as an Army medical corpsman during World War I, was active in Kanawha Lutheran Church, Masonic Lodge, the Shrine in Des Moines, served as mayor here 12 years and as state representative and state senator 10 years.

He was on the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners 15 years and in 1965 was named honorary president of the National Board of Pharmacy Examiners. He was a 50 year member of the Iowa Pharmaceutical Association, was on the board of directors of the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, the Farmers State Bank of Kanawha and the Northwestern Drug Company of Minneapolis. He was president of the Norway Rural Telephone Company in Kanawha.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, James, Green Bay Wis,; William, Belmond; a brother, Bill, Albuquerque, N.M.; and five grandchildren.
