Services for Hazel Hawley, 102, Garner, who died Tuesday, May 25, 1993 at Westview Care Center in Britt, were held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 29 at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner with Rev. Robert T. Ellis as officiant.

Mrs. Dean Cataldo, organist, accompanied soloist, Warren Torkelson.

Honorary bearers were Arnold Steege and Emil and Dorothy Christensen.

Active bearers were Bob Brooks, Bill Brooks, John Brooks, Gordon Upmeyer, Roy Green and D. Hawley Upmeyer.

Burial was in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

Hazel Edith Hawley, daughter of Edward and Nancy (Lamb) Wickham, was born June 12, 1890 in a log cabin north of Goodell. After the death of her mother, she moved to Ladysmith, WI. with her father and baby brother. After finishing her schooling she moved to Belmond to live with an uncle.

In 1907, she was married to Millard Brooks at Belmond. They made their home in Belmond. They had two children, Maude Brooks, born October 5, 1908, and Millard Merle Brooks, born September 2, 1911. His father died in June of 1911, six months before he was born.

March 27, 1913, she married Ray A. Hawley at Forest City. Two children were born to this union, Doris Hawley, born September 5, 1914, and Fae Hawley, born January 24, 1918. They lived in Hayfield until they retired in 1939 and moved into Garner. Hazel had lived at Prairie View Apartments for over 20 years. Due to ill health she was currently residing at Westview Care Center in Britt.

She loved her family, friends, flower gardening and strawberries. She also liked to cook for boarders, who always left well fed. Hazel loved big band music and was proud that she had danced with Lawrence Welk. She enjoyed life to the fullest and made the most of it.

She had been a member of the United Methodist Church since 1914. She also belonged to U.M.W., Birthday Club and was an honorary member of the Rebekah Lodge.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Howard J. (Maude) McCallum of Mineral Wells, TX. and Mrs. Fae Upmeyer and her husband, Alton, of Garden Grove, CA.; a daughter-in-law, Marie Brooks of Mesa AZ.; six grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Millard Matthew Brooks in June of 1911, and Ray A. Hawley, June 2, 1967; a daughter, Doris Hawley at six months of age; her son Millard Brooks, July 1, 1990; a grandson, Jerry Brooks; her parents; a sister, Mrs. Stine (Nancy) Devers; and a brother, Claude E. Wickham.
