June 1, 1924 - April 10, 2011Georgia Harrington, age 86 of Britt, died Sunday, April 10, 2011 at the Westview Care Center in Britt.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt with Father Dennis Miller officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Britt.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M., with a Catholic Daughters Rosary Service at 4:30 P.M and a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 P.M., at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West in Britt.
Georgia was born on June 1, 1924 on a farm east of Brainard, Nebraska. She attended Holy Trinity Catholic School to the eighth grade, then Brainard High School and was valedictorian of her senior class. Georgia played the tuba in the high school band and orchestra winning high honors on her solos at Nebraska state music contests.
Georgia attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and got a degree in Kindergarten-Primary education. She taught second grade in Marion, Iowa and three years in Spencer, Iowa.
On June 9, 1949 she was married to Francis Harrington of Britt at Visitation Church in Stacyville. The couple began farming east of Woden where they raised a family of seven sons and one daughter. Georgia was Iowa Farm Wife of the Year in 1980, served as Woden-Crystal Lake School Board President, and was a very active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Woden. She loved flower gardening, quilting and music.
In August 1988 they retired and moved to Britt, where she continued making quilts for family and charity. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt and the Catholic Daughters of America.
She is survived by her husband Francis, their children John and his wife Kathy of Stillwater, MN; Thomas and his wife Kim of Olathe, KS; Dr. William and his wife Dr. Gloria of Charleston, SC; Paul and his wife Dawn of Woden; James of Des Moines; Joseph and his wife Judy of Checotah, OK; Mary Mahoney and her husband Mike of Des Moines; Dr. Philip and his wife Melanie of Grinnell; a sister Emma Kriz, FSPA; and a brother Dr. George J. Kriz, Jr; six grandsons and eleven granddaughters.
Georgia was preceded in death by two sisters Rosalie and Mary and her parents George and Rose Kriz.
