Frances M. Merkel
1917-2000Frances M. Merkel of Ventura died at her home, Saturday, April 29. She was 83.
Funeral services for Mrs. Merkel were held Monday, May 1, at the United Methodist Church in Ventura. The Rev. Paul Hasel officiated.
Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ventura Public Library.
Frances (Sandrey) Merkel was born Jan. 18, 1917 in rural Goodell. She was the daughter of Frank and Katherine (Busse) Sandrey. She attended rural school through the eighth grade and graduated from Klemme High School in 1935.
On March 10, 1937, Frances Sandrey and Walter "Butch" Merkel were married at Mason City. The couple had three daughters. Mrs. Merkel enjoyed reading and collected books. She also enjoyed gardening.
Following the death of her husband in 1979, Mrs. Merkel made her home in Ventura.
Survivors include her three daughters, Dorothy Schnuelle, Ventura, Margaret Jennings of Lewisville, Texas, and Alice Tucker and her husband, Jim, of Longmont, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; Chris Brager and her husband, Rahn, Jane Bouwman and her husband, Mark, Brad Jacobson and his wife, LuAnn, Dan Jacobson and his wife, Debbie, Jeff Jennings and his wife, Collen, Jill Marrs and her husband, Bob, Julie Baker, Jolene Jennings, Janelle Jennings, Lori Geary, and Susan Hooper and her husband, Jeff; ad 19 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are a sister, Ethel Paden and her husband, Ed of LaMesa, Calif., and a brother, Wilson Sandrey and his wife, Betty of Lucerne, Calif.
Mrs. Merkel was preceded in death by her husband, Butch, on Feb. 23, 1979, her parents, three sisters; Katherine, Ava and Ada, and a brother, Bill.
