Services for Donald Sporaa, 60, of Mason City, who died Saturday, May 28, 1994, at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 31, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner with Fr. Joseph Mirowski of the Greek Orthodox Church of Transfiguration as officiant. Casket bearers were Richard Matson, Granny, Jason Bolhuis, Kit Grandon, Lon Gaines and Pastor Mark Pluff. Burial was in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. Visitation was held at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.
Donald Duane Sporaa, the son of Henry and Margaret (Yoho) Sporaa, was born July 10, 1933 at Iowa City. He attended school in Garner and then moved to Clear Lake where he graduated from high school. November24, 1952, he married Tillie Westendorf at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. He served his country in the U. S. Army from April 1, 1953 until 1955. He attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City. In 1958, Don and Tillie moved to California where he was employed by Western Electric Company. In November of 1972, they returned to Iowa and lived in Manly. Don worked at White Farm Equipment in Charles City from 1973 to 1980. In May of 1993 he received his Bachelor of Science Degree with a double major in Sociology/Psychology from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI. He had resided in Belmond with his daughter, Kristie Smith since October of 1993.
He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church. He is survived by his two children, Kristie Sue Smith of Belmond and Dana Sporaa of Mason City; three grandchildren, Julie Smith, Jamie Smith and Shane Smith; three sisters, Ardith Wick and her husband John of Anaheim, CA, Audrey Sutton and her husband, Larry, of Saratoga, CA, and Ailene Beyer and her husband, Bud of Cedarpines Park, CA; a half-brother, Oscar Sporaa of Dows; three sisters-in-law, Betty Sporaa of Dows, Viola Gaines of Mason City and Grace Sporaa of Dows; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three half-brothers, Fred Sporaa, Carl Sporaa and Ollie Gaines.
