GARNER - Anthony "Tony" Young, 87, of Garner died Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Saturday, March 24th at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Fr. Paul Lippstock officiating. Following the service, his body will be donated to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy. Inurnment will be held at a later date at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Friday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., Garner with a parish rosary at 4 P.M. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Anthony Young Memorial Fund in care of Barbara Young-Gollaher 4505 Quail Hollow Court, Ft. Worth, TX 76133, and will be directed to the Parkinson's Research Foundation and the American Heart Association.

Anthony Ferdinand Young, the son of Rudolph and Mary (Simper) Young, was born August 17, 1924 on a farm west of Garner. He attended Garfield No. 7 near Garner and graduated from Garner High School in 1942. After attending air craft metal working school in Minneapolis for a short time he returned home and entered the U.S. Army in 1944. Tony joined as an infantryman serving in the Pacific Theater. On October 15, 1946 he married Mary Alice Thome at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, Iowa. Tony then was called back to serve in the Korean Conflict in 1950. Following his honorable discharge in 1951 he returned home to Garner and worked for Art Kramer Construction. Late in 1951 he joined Iowa Electric Light and Power Company where he worked as a gas and electric serviceman, a meter reader and an appliance repair man until his retirement in 1984. He enjoyed his family, polka music, gardening, woodworking and sitting under "the roof".

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Garner VFW Post 5515.

Tony is survived by his wife, Mary Alice, of Garner; six children, Rose Mary (Edward) Ruddy of Ft. Dodge, Barbara Jo (Tim) Gollaher of Fort Worth, TX, Michael Young of Garner, Mark (Laura) Young of Larkspur, CO, Karen Ann (Doug) Beard of Floyd and Lawrence "Larry" (Jan) Young of Garner; thirteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five brothers, Robert (Mildred) Young, Francis Young, Elmer Young, Carl (Dianne) Young and Richard (Sandy) Young all of Garner; a sister-in-law, LoEtta Young of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Fern Chessman Young; sister, Mary Ann Stupka; brother, Raymond Young; brother-in-law, Raymond Stupka; and sisters-in-law, Bonnie Young and Shirlene Young.
