Britt native killed in 2 car crash

Britt - Erwin E. Burgardt, 63, former Britt resident, was killed in a double fatality two car collision near Plover Friday night.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Palo Alto County Hospital at Emmetsburg along with Melvin Blaha, 13, Havelock, driver of the other car.

A passenger in the Blaha car, Brent Goysen, 14, also of Havelock, is in serious condition at the hospital.

The accident occurred 2 1\2 miles north of Plover on a county road at 10 p.m. The Palo Alto County sheriff's office and the highway patrol investigated.

Funeral arrangements for Mr. Burgardt are incomplete at the Boughton Funeral Home, Britt.

He was born Jan. 14, 1907, in Britt, the son of Nicholas and Hannah (Trams) Burgardt. He was graduated from Britt High School and attended the University of Iowa for two years.

Aug. 18, 1940 he married Florence Thompson, in Madison, Minn. The lived in Lime Springs and Plover where Mr. Burgardt operated a restaurant. In 1964 they moved to a farm near Curlew.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Kenton (Janice) Eppelsheiner, Littleton, Colo., Mrs. James (Muriel) Henrichs, Rochester, Minn., Mrs. Richard (Myrna) Karsten, Iowa City; six grandchildren, two brothers; and five sisters, including Mrs. Flora Mason, Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Britt - Funeral services for Erwin E. Burgardt, 63, Curlew, who died Friday in a car accident near Plover, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Boughton Funeral Home, Britt. A prior service will be held at United Methodist Church, Plover, will officiate at both services. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Masonic rites will be conducted at the cemetery.

Erwin Burgardt

Services for Erwin E. Burgardt, 63, widely known resident of the Plover Curlew area, were held Tuesday morning in the United Methodist Church at Plover. The Rev. Maurice Frevert officiated. Mr. Burgardt died late Friday night two and one half miles north of Plover when his car collided head on with a car driven by Melvin Blaha, (13) son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Blaha, Havelock, who also died in the same accident.

A second service was held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon in the Boughton Funeral Home, Britt. Masonic memorial services were held at the Evergreen Cemetery,Britt.

The casket bearers at Plover were Eugene Hamand, Charles Prohaska, Warren McCreey, A. O. Garlock, Richard Logan and Harold O'Neal. At Britt, the casket bearers were Norman DeYoung, Merle Kerns, Harold Jacobson, Maurice Peterson, Henry E. Meyer, Rollin Perkins, Mainard T. Rydson and LeRoy Zuehl.

Erwin Elmer Burgardt, son of Nicholas and Hannah Thrams, was born, January 14, 1907, at Britt. He was a graduate of the Britt High School and grew to manhood in the community. He completed two years pre law study at the State University in Iowa City.

For several years he was employed in Greenland and Alaska for government construction. On August 18, 1940, he was united in marriage to Florence Thompson at Madison, Minn. The couple established their home at Britt, then later lived at Lime Springs for some time.

About six years ago Mr. and Mrs. Burgardt disposed of their business at Plover and have resided near Curlew. He was a former member of the Plover Chamber of Commerce and was a member of several branches of the Masonic Lodge including The Mysteria Lodge 583, Plover; The Royal Arch Lodge 108 of Iowa; The Holy Grail Lodge No. 70, Emmetsburg; Eastern Star 383; and was a Shriner.

He is survived by his wife, Florence; his daughters, Mrs. Kenton (Janice) Eppelsheimer, Littleton, Colorado; Mrs. James (Muriel) Henrichs, Rochester, Minnesota; Mrs. Richard (Myrna) Karsten, Iowa City, six grandchildren; two brothers and five sisters, Clyde Burgardt, San Gabriel, California; Clayton Burgardt, Des Moines, Mrs. Otto Gillister, Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Royal Dickson, Hayward, Wis., Mrs. Robert Newberg, Salt Lake City, Utah, Mrs. Flora Mason, Clear Lake, Miss Esther Burgardt, Minneapolis, Minn.
