Services for Mrs. Bernice "Bece" Smith, 79, of Woden, who died Tuesday, May 2, 1989 at her home in Woden, were held 1:30 p.m., Friday, May 5 at the Evangelical Free Church in Britt with Rev. Dr. Aubrey McGann as officiant.

Mrs. Dwight Anderson, organist, accompanied soloist, Mrs. Carolyn Dawson.

Casket bearers were Gene Huling, Daryl Huling, Dennis Zuehl, Leonard Leerar, Tim Long, and Tom Everett.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Visitation was held at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Woden.

Bernice "Bece" Smith, the daughter of Harry and Florence (Muck) Bowen, was born February 10, 1910 at Albia. She was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Chariton. She attended school in Russel.

December 11, 1927, she was married to Peter "Pete" Smith at Chariton. They lived in Ottumwa, Russell, Goodell, Britt and in 1955, moved to Woden. In 1970, they retired from farming and continued to live in Woden. They enjoyed spending their winters in Florida. Bece taught Sunday School for many years and was active in church work, until she was stricken with a stroke in 1983.

She was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Stilson and attended the Evangelical Free Church in Britt.

She is survived by her husband, Peter "Pete" Smith of Woden; her daughter, Mrs. Barbara Tegtmeyer and her husband, Richard, of Woden; her son, Paul Dean Smith; two grandsons, Shane and Brad; two sisters, Mrs. Ferne Sandrin of Livingston, IL and Mrs. G.O. (lone) Ewart of Connell, WA; a sister in law, Mrs. Albina Bowen of Milan, IL; and two nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Harry Bowen.
