Services held James Denney
Services for James T. Denney, 81, were held Monday Mar. 22, at 1:30 p.m., from the Bohn Funeral home with the Rev. Leroy E. Franz, pastor of the Zion United Church of Christ, Garner, officiating.
Mr. Denney died Friday, March 19, 1971, at the Concord Manor Nursing Home, Garner. At the time of his death, he had reached the age of 81 years, five months, and ten days.
The Rev. Franz used as his text Isaiah 43:1, with the meditation, "You Are Mine." Comfort in music was supplied by the hymns, "Abide with Me," and, "The Old Rugged Cross." the pallbearers were; Verner Hamilton, Curtis Liscomb, Roy McCormick, Arthur Jass, Pete Cropley, and Ralph Jorgensen. He was laid to rest in the Concord cemetery.
Mr. Denney was born October 9, 1889, at Bristol, Virginia, a son of Henry and Mary (Martin) Denney. He moved to Garner in 1913, and has lived here since. He was a former drainage contractor (tiling); and he retired from this work in 1955.
He was married to Florence Ferguson of Miller, and to this union were born four children; Robert, Boyd, James, Jr., and a daughter, Elaine.
He and his wife, Florence, operated the Denney Cafe at the junction of highways 18 and 69 for a number of years.
He is survived by his wife, three sons; Robert of Clear Lake; Boyd of Garner; James, Jr., of Newport News, Virginia; and one daughter Mrs. Merlin (Elaine) Putz of Crete, Illinois; and nine grandchildren; and by one sister, Mrs. Betty Large of Bluntville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
He will be sorely missed by the members of his family and circle of friends in the Garner vicinity.
