Interment ~ Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery ~ rural Titonka, IowaRoger William Spear was born November 24, 1951, in Algona, Iowa, the son of Robert and Florence (Van Hove) Spear. He grew up in rural Titonka and attended school in Titonka, graduating from the Titonka High School in 1970. After his schooling he attended Iowa State University, while also farming.
On June 23, 1973, Roger was united in marriage to Judy Schmidt at Immanuel Lutheran Church. After their marriage they lived and farmed on Judy's family farm near Woden. While continuing to farm they also ran The Barn at Gruis Recreation Area for three years.
One of the favorite things Roger enjoyed doing was spoiling his granddaughters, which he was very good at. He was also known as quite the practical jokester and also enjoyed playing golf, cards, woodworking and his guns. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and Immanuel Lutheran Church where he served on the church council. In the past he served as a school board member, on the Gruis Recreation Board and the ambulance crew.
Roger died Saturday, June 4, 2011, at his residence near Woden, Iowa. He was 59.
He is survived by his wife, Judy of Woden; daughter, Amy and Scott Luedke of Elgin, IL; granddaughters, Avery and Tatum; mother, Florence Spear of Titonka; mother-in-law, Marilyn Schmidt of Mason City; brother, Kenneth and Debi of Wesley; sister, Sharon and Allen Divis of LuVerne; nieces and nephews, Brennan and Eric Spear, Philip, Matthew and Wendy Divis and Brandon Millard; sister-in-law, Tammy and Brian Millard of Mason City.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bob H. Spear; father-in-law, Ernie Schmidt and sister-in-law, Deborah Schmidt.
