J. E. Tierney Dies in Des Moines; Interment to Be Made at Garner

J. E. Tierney, 55, who had been identified with the weekly newspaper field for many years, living at Garner until recently purchasing a weekly at Ames, died Friday morning at Des Moines from pneumonia. He was the father of Mrs. Roy Igou, 210 Taylor avenue southwest.

Mr. Tierney was in Des Moines on business when he became ill. Pneumonia developed, which resulted in his death. Funeral arrangements have not been made but burial will be made in Garner.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Bera Igou of Mason City, Thedora of Boulder Dam and Evelyn of Garner.

Tierney Rites Held At Garner

Pneumonia Victim Identified With Weekly Newspapers Many Years.

Garner - Funeral services for J. E. Tierney, 59, were held Sunday afternoon at the high school auditorium, preceded by services at the home. Bethel lodge, 319, of the Masonic order was in charge with Dr. Dibble of Mason City delivering the sermon, Miss Arclay Marshal, reader form the Christian Science church of Mason City assisted. The auditorium was filled to capacity.

Joseph Edward Tierney was born Nov. 24, 1876, in Rock county, Wis., one of 11 children of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Tierney. He came with his parents to Garner when a small boy and learned the printer's trade in the old Garner Signal. As a youth he became identified with the weekly newspaper field, having owned papers at Klemme, Goodell, Crystal Lake, Forest City, Lake Mills, Armstrong, Panora, Centerville and Garner.

Selling the Garner Leader to W. G. Williams eight years ago, he returned and was employed as advertising solicitor for seven years. Three weeks ago he assumed charge of the Ames Arrow. While at Des Moines on business, Feb. 15, he became ill and his wife and daughters were called the following day. Pneumonia caused his death early Friday.

He was a master Mason of Bethel lodge for 25 years and a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. He was married to Miss Abbie Calhoun on July 12, 1896, at Algona, who with three daughters, Mrs. Bera Igou, Mason City; Mrs. Theodora Olson, Boulder City, Nev., and Evelyn, at home, survive.

Four sisters, Mrs. Mayme Bailey, Garner; Miss Hannah Tierney, Seattle, Wash.; Miss Julia Tierney, Janesville, Wis., and Mrs. Vinnie Finch, Haquairn, Wash., survive.

Mr. and Mrs. George Holtzbauer, Lorraine Tierney and Craig Tierney of Algona were the relatives from a distance besides Mr. and Mrs. Roy Igou. Pallbearers were W. G. Williams, Fred C. Missal, Roy L. McMillin, L. M. Brower. E. P. Hanson and Elmer Raw. Interment was at Concord cemetery.
