Hold Rites at Britt for P. Strange

Britt - Funeral services for Patrick Strange, Negro who died Saturday at a Mason City hospital, will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Boughton funeral home with the Rev. C. K. McNary, pastor of the Britt Methodist church, in charge and assisted by the Rev. Paul Scott of Mason City. Burial will be in Britt Evergreen cemetery.

Patrick Strange was born Oct. 22, 1861, at Shipman, Nelson county, Va. He was an ordained retired Methodist minister. Mr. and Mrs. Strange had lived in Britt for the past 40 years.

Surviving are his widow; two nephews, Harry Walker of Oskaloosa and Homer Johnson of Chicago, and two nieces, Mrs. Ida Gransberry of Milwaukee and Mrs. Sadie Lampskine of Detroit, Mich.

P. Strange Services Held

Aged Resident of Britt Was Former Methodist Minister

Britt - Funeral services for Patrick Strange were held Tuesday afternoon at the Boughton funeral home with the Rev. C. K. McNary in charge, assisted by the Rev. Paul Scott of Mason City. Burial was in Britt Evergreen cemetery.

Patrick Strange was born Aug. 28, 1861, in Shipman, Va. He and Mrs. Strange have been the only negro family in Britt for the past 40 years. Mr. Strange was a retired Methodist minister.

Surviving are his widow and two nephews and two nieces.

Pallbearers were Ed Meleney, A. M. Staplin, S. K. Wright, Anthony Baker, E. A. Lloyd and Fred Benson.

Pat Strange Dies At Mercy Hospital

Pat Strange, the only colored man in Britt, is dead. He was taken to a Mason City hospital Thursday and on Saturday afternoon passed away, following a stroke of apoplexy.

This man was born in slavery on a southern plantation in Nelson county, Virginia, on August 28, 1861. In that same year, on October 22, and on the same plantation, was born the woman who was to be his lifelong companion and who survives him. She was taken to the Hancock County Home when her husband was removed to the hospital and is in very feeble health, in fact so much so that it appears life is nearing the close for her.

Pat Strange had quite a career. As a young man he was a leader among the colored folks who had been freed. He learned to read and write, studied theology and became a preacher and Bible student. At Buxton, Iowa, he worked among the colored folks in the coal mines, after going to Webster county near Fort Dodge and finally coming to Britt some forty years ago.

He bought and developed a small place in southwest Britt where he eked out a living. His mining experience came in handy and for years he was employed as a blaster of stones and stumps on the farms over a wide area. He never suffered an accident doing this dangerous work. In late years he acted as the village garbage collector.

Until health caused his decline Pat was seen regularly on Sunday morning going toward the Methodist church, dressed in his pulpit coat and carrying his page-worn Bible. He led a class of adults for many years.

The Charley Williams, the Boldridges, and other colored people died or left Britt and Pat and his wife were alone here for some fifteen years or more. However, their white friends administered to them when ill health made it impossible for them to attend to all their chores and home duties.
Pat lived to a ripe old age, a little past 81 years. His remains lie in Evergreen cemetery. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Boughton Funeral Home, the Rev. C. K. McNary assisted by the Rev. Paul Scott (colored) of Mason City in charge.

Mrs. Sadie Lampkin, a niece, came from Detroit, Mich., to attend the funeral.
