Hold Johnson Funeral Rites

Pioneer Resident of Corwith Was Noted as Dress Designer

Corwith - Miss Portia P. Johnson, 71, a pioneer resident of Corwith, died at her home Friday following a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the First Baptist church in charge of the Rev. William S. Baker. The Rev. A. J. Barkley, Methodist pastor, The Rev. John Schroeder of Gilmore City and the Rev. Paul Williams of Humboldt also officiated. Pallbearers were Armond Tabb, Phillip Puffer, Neal Wildman, Thomas Hain, Donald Meyers and Raymond Frey. Harvey Hankins, Charles Thompson, Mrs. Wilbur Studer and Mrs. Donald Meyers sang with accompaniment by Mrs. Armond Tabb. Burial was in the Corwith cemetery.

The second daughter of the late Elizabeth and A. A. Johnson, veteran Corwith printer. Miss Johnson was born June 4, 1871, in West Union. An accomplished dress designer, she began the academic part of her education in West Union, continuing in Emmetsburg and continued it in Cedar Rapids and other cities.

In 1925 Miss Johnson gave up her business in Cedar Rapids to come to Corwith to care for her father and had resided her since.

Miss Johnson was a charter member of the First Baptist church, Northern Association World Wide Guild president, sponsor of the Corwith W.W.G., president of the Baptist Mission circle and church clerk as well as Sunday school teacher of the young people's class.

Her parents and brother, Franklin F., preceded her in death. Surviving are two brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Jennie Sawyer of Corwith, Mrs. Roland Coultherd of Rapid City, S. Dak., George G. Johnson of Aurora, Ill., and Burr B. Johnson of Arlington, Va.

Relatives from away who attended the services were Mr. Johnson and Miss Hattie Taylor of Nashua.
