Formerly Lived In Garner In Territory Southeast Of Britt
Special to Garner Leader and Signal
Britt - One of the last members of Howe post G.A.R. of Britt answered the last call. Taps were sounded as a full military funeral was accorded a veteran of the Civil war when funeral services were held Sunday for Adolph Earnest Klein. He was born in Saxony, Germany, on the 23rd day of September, 1843, and passed away at Gully, Minn., at the home of his son, E. F. Klein, on Christmas eve, aged 91 years, 3 months and 2 days.
With his parents and one sister, he came to the United States when he was but fourteen years old. The family settled on a farm near davenport, where his father built the first of the log cabins built in Hickory Grove in 1858.
He worked at home until the Civil war broke out in 1861, when he volunteered as a private in the 44th Iowa Volunteer infantry, with an older brother. After serving his first enlistment, he returned home on furlough. Later he re-enlisted in the 10th Iowa Volunteer Infantry and served until the close of the war in 1865. He was with the forces of General Sherman on his march from Atlanta to the sea, and was at the grand review at Washington D. C.
Mr. Klein was married to Miss Clementina Peterson on Dec. 25, 1867, near Davenport and started farming in Scott county the following spring. Later they moved to Grundy county and settled near Reinbeck. Here there was born to their union 4 sons and 4 daughters.
The family moved to Hancock county in 1880, and settled on a farm seven miles southeast of Britt where they lived for fourteen years on the same farm. They then moved to a farm two miles north of where the present town of Kanawha now stands, where they farmed for the next four years. Later they sold out and bought a home in Garner, where they lived for a number of years. Some years ago Mrs. Klein passed away and was buried in the cemetery at Britt.
Twelve years ago Mr. Klein went to live with his son, E. F. Klein, at Gully, Minn., where he passed away on last Christmas day of arterial sclerosis. He leaves to mourn his passing three sons and two daughters. They are E. P. Klein, Gully, Minn.; O. B. Klein, Admiral, Saskatchewan, Can.; A. C. Klein, Fairleight, Sask., Can.; Mrs. Anna Thompson, Belmond, and Mrs. Theresa Dunham, Admiral, Sask., Can. There are also ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Klein were members of the Methodist church in Garner. He was one of the oldest H.W.A. members of the Britt camp 577, and one of the last of the Howe post G.A.R. of Britt.
Mr. Klein was a kind and conscientious father and husband, always trying to see where he could do someone a kindness.
The funeral was held last Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church in Britt, in charge of the Rev. C. M. McMillan. who took for his text 11 Tim. 4:6-8. "I have fought a good fight. I have kept the faith."
The Britt American Legion furnished a guard of honor, the pallbearers and firing squad. Interment was in the Britt cemetery beside his wife and full military honors were accorded the dead soldier. The committal was read, the ritual of the American Legion was given. Taps were sounded, the benediction was given, a salute to the dead was fired and and one of the last members of the Grand Army was left in the bivouac of the dead.
In attendance at the funeral were Mrs. Anna Thompson and daughters, Florence and Ethel, Belmond; Arthur Ruka and son, Merril and daughter, Elanor.
