Rites held Monday for Abe T. Olson
Funeral services for Abe T. Olson of Forest City were conducted Monday afternoon at Immanuel Lutheran church in Forest City. The Rev. Steve Dornbusch and the Rev. John Hieronymus officiated.
Donald Meyer was soloist and Leonard Markusen, organist. Casket bearers were Mark Alm, Marlin D. Olson, the Rev. Philip Peters, Randy Olson, Rodney Olson and Ronald Olson. Burial was in Madison township cemetery with the Petersen funeral home in charge of arrangements. Olson, 78, died Friday [10 Jul 1981] at the Forest City community hospital. He had been hospitalized since June 29.
Abe T. Olson, the son of Tollef and Hage Brakke Olson, was born May 4, 1903, on a farm in Mt. Valley township. He was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran church and attended the Center school in Mt. Valley township. As a young man, he started working as an auto mechanic.
Olson married Gertrude Peterson May 16, 1926, at Immanuel Lutheran church in Forest City. In 1929 he opened a garage on Highway 9 east of Forest City. Several years later the Olsons operated a resort in Minnesota and returned to Forest City to operate the former Twin Oaks motel. In 1960 they returned to operate the garage until retiring in 1973 to Forest City.
Olson had been a member of the Immanuel Lutheran church and served as a member of the board of trustees of the church. The Olsons celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary May 16, 1981.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude: four children, Palmer Olson of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Carl Olson of Clear Lake, Mrs. Luther (Avis) Alm of Forest City and Mrs. Dale (Arlene) Haes of Hobbs, New Mexico; and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Alma Borgelin, three brothers, Ole, Albert and Truman Olson, and one grandchild.
