Arild Madsen was born in Laaland, Denmark on Mar 15, 1856. He came to the U.S. as a young man and settled in Sheffield, Illinois. He married Dec. 10, 1882 to Fredrikke Rasmussen. They moved to Crystal Lake in 1901 and later to Madison Township, then in 1919 to Forest City.
From 12 children born to them, 4 survive: Agnes ( Mrs. Barney Bartleson) of Hayfield, Iowa, Edwin Madsen of Santa Barbara, California, Emma (Mrs. Fred Jackson) of Union, Iowa, and Cecilia Madsen at home; 13 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 2 nephews, and 2 nieces.
A son, Herman Walter Madsen, died in Kansas in 1931 and a son, Albert Madsen died in 1914. His wife, Fredrikke, died June 31, 1936. Arild died Feb 4, 1938 after a long illness and is buried in Crystal Lake Cemetery.
