James H. Johnson rites held Friday

Funeral services for Forest City farmer James H. Johnson, was held Friday afternoon at Immanuel Lutheran church, The Rev. Ole Winter officiated.

Mrs. George Nieman was soloist and Norma Boomgarden, organist. Casket bearers were Elvin Larson, Elmer Larson, Lawrence Loeschen, R. B. Monson, Richard Rosen and Robert Schinnow.

Graveside military rites were conducted by Forest City American Legion Post 121. Burial was in Madison Township cemetery with the Petersen Funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Johnson, 70, had recently underwent hip surgery in a Mason City hospital. He died unexpectedly in the hospital Oct. 28 [1981].

James H. Johnson, the son of John and Mary Johnson, was born April 10, 1911, on a farm east of Leland. He was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran church and attended rural school near his home. Johnson farmed at home before entering the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in the European Theater, receiving his discharge in 1945.

Johnson then returned to Forest City where he established a feeder pig operation. He continued the business and eight years ago established a partnership with his son, Dean. Feb. 14, 1948 he married Wanda Kiefer Irvin in Forest City.

He has been a member of Immanuel Lutheran church and the Forest City American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda of Forest City; five children, Mrs. John E.(Mavis) Nieman of Kamrar, Frederick L. Irvin of California, Mo., Douglas C. Irvin of Omaha, Dean Johnson of Forest City and Mrs. Jay (Beth) Erdman of Klemme; a brother, Clifford Johnson of Osage; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, David Lee, two sisters, Ruby Eide and Jeanette Thompson, and three brothers, Merle Johnson, Ben Bracky and Selmer Bracky.
