Obit for Katter, Anna per Garner Signal and Leader August, 1942

MRS. HENRY KATTER, PIONEER OF HANCOCK COUNTY, DIED MAY 8 – FUNERAL RITES HELD MONDAY AFTERNOON MAY 11, AT REFORMED CHURCH.

Mrs. Henry Katter, nee Anna Lisetta Meyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Meyer, was born Nov. 15, 1859, in Town Rhine, Sheboygan county, Wis. She was baptized infancy and later after receiving instruction in the Evangelical church was confirmed there.

In 1874 she came with her parents to live in Iowa and they settled on a farm southeast of Garner.

On Dec. 19, 1878, she was married to Henry H. Katter. This ceremony was preformed by Rev. Mosebach who used as his text Ps. 50 14-15. This was the first marriage in Peace Reformed congregation of which both were members. The young couple settled on a farm southwest of Garner and were among the pioneers of this section of the county and they experienced all that goes with pioneer life.

Two sons and six daughters were born to this union. The two sons preceded the mother in death. Herman was called out of this life Nov. 27, 1913, and Henry Feb. 17, 1937.

About 1925 the couple retired from active farming and later lived in their new house out on the farm until three years ago last fall since which time they made their home with their son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. George Goll.

In 1928 this couple was privileged to celebrate their golden wedding. Upon this occasion the Rev. C. Schmid used for his text the same one the Rev. Mosebach had used at their marriage, namely Ps. 50, 14-15.

In 1938 their sixtieth anniversary was celebrated. At that time, the Rev. William Huenemann was privileged to be present and based his talk on Ps. 71 7-9 and 14-18.

In this life joys are mingled with sorrows and so it was also in the life of the departed mother. Besides other afflictions during her span of life, one more came to her when in the month of May, 1940 she had the misfortune of falling and breaking her hip. Since that time she was confined to the house entirely. While she was able to sit up part of the time since this happened yet towards the close of her life she was again confined to her bed.

In all her sufferings she was very patient and not of the complaining nature. Friends who called upon her found her cheerful and grateful of the good care getting from her husband and her children. She remained a faithful member of the Peace Reformed church until the time of her death.

As a true wife and faithful mother she was called out of this life on Friday evening, May 8, 1942 at the age of 82 years, five months, and 13 days.

She leaves to mourn her departure, her aged and sorrowful husband and six daughters: Anna (Mrs. Henry Kirchhefer): Mathilda (Mr. Otto Schlawin): Wilhelmina (Mrs. George Goll): Amalia (Mrs. Otto Schroer): Selma (Mrs. Walther Woiwood): and Sophia, (Mrs. Elmer Bredlow) all of this vicinity; also 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; and one half brother, Julius Meyer of Hayfield and a sister Mrs. Elizabeth Cash of Sand Point, Idaho, and many other relatives and fiends.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Peace Reformed church and were in charge the Rev. Wm. Huenemann who gave the German sermon and the Rev. Calvin Grosshuesch who preached in English. Music was furnished my Mesdames Edwin Greiman, Paul Elling, Victor Huenemann.

Pallbears will be Henry Boland, Otto Lemke, Menno Einhuis, Lewis Stahl, Roger Schlawin, and Donald Woiwood. Burial will be in Ell township cemetery.
