Rev. Darrell WeberGordon Earl Upmeyer, the son of Arthur and Mary (Goll) Upmeyer was born October 10, 1923 on a farm southwest of Garner. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church. Gordon attended school at Liberty Township # 2 through eighth grade and then attended Garner High School, graduating in 1941. In June of 1943, he entered the military service,
serving in the U. S. Navy until March of 1946. Gordon received the Purple Heart after his ship was hit by two Japanese suicide planes near Iwo Jima. On April 2, 1946, he married Marguerite Marie Borchers at the United Methodist Church in
Garner. They farmed southwest of Garner until they moved into town in the fall of 1973. He built their new home in Garner, worked as a carpenter and also ran a sharpening business for several years. Gordon was an avid gardener and enjoyed woodworking; having built several grandfather clocks and many walnut cedar chests in his home shop. He also built furniture
for each of his grandchildren from walnut trees planted by his grandfather on the home farm. Marguerite and Gordon had celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary, April 2, 1996.He was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church and the adult Bible class; sang in the choir and served as a Deacon, Elder, and chairman of the building committee for the new parsonage. He was a vice-president of the Hancock County Farm Bureau board, a long time member of the Liberty Go-Getters 4-H Club and was a charter member of the Iowa River Chapter FFA. He had received his Iowa Farmer Award in Kansas City, MO.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Upmeyer of Garner; three children, Kathy Woiwod of Garner and her three children, Elizabeth Waddingham and her husband, Mark, and their children, Megan, Brooke and Benjamin, Neal Woiwod and Susan Woiwod; Doug Upmeyer and his wife, Linda, of Garner and their five children, Sara, Chad, Matt, Blake and Tyler Upmeyer and Ron Upmeyer and his wife, Marcia, of Garner and their two children, Adam Upmeyer and his wife, Denise and Mary Upmeyer; two brothers, Alton Upmeyer and his wife, Fae, of Hemit, CA and Curtis Upmeyer and his wife, Anna Mae, of Garner; and many
nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Arlo Woiwod, January 23, 1991; and a grandson, Andy Upmeyer, grandson April 20, 1992.
