Death has taken D. J. Spieker, well known in Hancock county from Woden to Garner where he has resided on farms these many years. He died at 5:30 Sunday morning on the farm where the family had just settled, three miles north of the county home on the Hayfield road. The body was brought to the Boughton Funeral Home and prepared for burial and the funeral, in charge of the Rev. Gerhard Hjelmaas, will be held Thursday afternoon at the Methodist church in Crystal Lake. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery, Britt.
D. J. Spieker was born at Ackley, Iowa, May 18, 1873. At death he had reached an age of 71 years and 10 months. He grew up at Ackley and was married there to Martha Dahlmann on May 31, 1899. There were born to this couple ten children, five of whom preceded their father in death. They are Della (Mrs. Ollie) Fritch (Foertsch), Alden (Adeline), Helen, Martin and an unnamed infant son.
Surviving Mr. Spieker are his beloved wife, Martha, and five children, namely, Mrs. Sabo Hillenga, of West Bend, Iowa; Mrs. Fred Lassahn, at Crystal Lake; Mrs. Frank Johnson, at Garner; Jerry at home; and Sgt. Lawrence Spieker, in service in the South Pacific. There are three grandchildren, Mae and Phyllis Hillenga, of West Bend, and Earline Spieker, of Garner.
Other survivors are three brothers, Jerry I. Spieker, Ackley; Fred Spieker, Aplington; Reinhard Spieker, Aplington; and three sisters, Mrs. Hiska DeVries of Aplington; Mrs. Clara Kuper, of Ackley; Mrs. Mattie Frerichs, of Gladbrook, Iowa.
The Spieker family have spent many years in Hancock county and have farmed in various places near Woden, Crystal Lake, Britt, and had moved the first of March to the farm north of Duncan. They were a hard working, friendly family, and made many friends wherever they lived. Mr. Spieker lost a hand in an accident when a boy and went through life thus handicapped, but he took his station along with the best of men on the farm.
