PIONEER LADY LAID TO REST
Mrs. Carrie Larson Died Saturday in Eighty-fourth Year Buried Tuesday
Came to America from Denmark when 23 Years Old and Settled in This County
Another light has been extinguished. Another pioneer has passed to the Better Land. One whose name is known to everyone in the northern part of Hancock County and even in all parts of the country. Living in the community of Crystal Lake for sixty years is a record that few have equaled.
Mrs. Carrie Larson was born in Loland, Denmark, March 26, 1849. She passed away at the age of eighty four years, six months and eleven days. At the age of twenty three years she came to America, coming directly to this part of the country and has resided here the remainder of her life.
Mrs. Larson arrived at Quebec, Canada, in 1872, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Chris Johnson, Mrs. Johnson's mother and Klaus Peterson. The party came through Chicago immediately after the great fire and arrived at Britt which was only a railroad station. The women stayed at the station while the men groped through darkness to Buffalo Grove where Chris Johnson's brother James lived. The next day they returned through mud and sloughs that covered the prairie.
Mrs. Larson stayed at Buffalo Grove for some time, then worked in Ellington township and later to concord township. She was married at Forest city to Mr. Larson in January 1875. They made their home in the first Buffalo Grove school house and the third one in Crystal township. Her husband preceded her in death eight years ago.
Seven children were born to this union, one, August, departed this life twenty-one years ago. Three sons, Laurice, Willie and Jimmie Larson, and three daughters Mrs. L. A. Nelson, Mrs. P. A. Hanson and Mrs. Julius Jensen, who all reside in Crystal township; also thirty-one grandchildren and four adopted grandchildren; she has one brother, Dak.
Their first home was in Buffalo Grove where they were among the earliest of the pioneers. Later they moved to Upper Flat and for twenty years have resided in Crystal Lake.
She was a member of the Upper Flat Evangelical church.
for the past four years she has been a most patient sufferer from cancer and death was kind in reliving her suffering. She was ready to go and welcomed death.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Crystal Lake on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock following short services at the home. Rev. R. Berntsen conducted the services with the assistance of Rev. H. E. Hutchings. Burial was made in the Crystal Lake cemetery beside her husband.
