In Response To: family history (Daniel Walter Petersen)

I located one obituary for you and a 50th wedding anniversary article. Mary's maiden name appears to be Hanson [Hansdatter in Denmark]. There is some discrepancy regarding her exact date of death, but the obituary I located is from the 1911 newspaper and not from 1910. In addition, both Thomas Christian and Ana Maria (Hansdatter) Pedersen's death and burial records are for 1927 and 1911 as recorded in the official church records of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Jewell. More below on the discrepancy. I also could find no link or proof of the surname Dere/Jere other than from a submitted family tree on Ancestry which appears to have mixed up two different families and mistakenly combined them. Hope this helps.

MRS. THOS. PETERSON PASSED AWAY
After a sickness of about three weeks Mrs. Thos. Peterson peacefully passed away at the home in the south part of town early Monday morning. Mrs. Peterson was an aged lady, 71 years old. With her husband she had resided in Jewell for about 27 years, ever since coming to America. For several years past she had been in rather poor health, and of late she has been in rather poor …[undecipherable] and has gradually grown weaker. Her husband gave her her medicine as usual at about three o'clock Monday morning, and immediately afterwards she fell asleep. Mr. Peterson in the morning did his work about the house, not disturbing the sleep of his wife, until the time again came to give the medicine. Then it was found that she had quietly breathed her last.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon from the home at twelve o'clock and from the Danish church at one, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Falck. Interment will be made in Evergreen cemetery. The Record joins the friends in extending sympathy to the members of the family, in their bereavement.

In 1884 she came to America, her husband having preceded her about a year. Ever since coming to America she has lived with her husband in Jewell. She was a member of the Danish Lutheran church here, in which she has always been a faithful worker and a loyal member. She died Monday, January 9, 1911 at the age of 73 years, 1 month, and 13 days.

She was the mother of three children, all of whom survive her, Mrs. Peter Christianson of near Jewell, and Mrs. Chris Anderson and Mr. C. P. Thompson, both of Jewell. Her husband also survives. In the years she has lived here Mrs. Peterson had made many friends, all of whom mourn her departure and extend their sympathy to the bereaved husband and family.

CARD OF THANKS We sire to express our heartfelt thanks to the kind friends and neighbors for their many kindnesses shown at the time of the death of our wife and mother, and for the many beautiful floral offerings.

CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING
The following account of the celebration of their golden wedding observed by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. Peterson, of Jewell, appeared in last Sunday's Register & Leader, together with the photo of the old people: Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Peterson of over a quarter of a century residents of Jewell, celebrated their golden wedding Thursday, May 27th, at their home. Their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, to the number of about twenty, and also a large number of their friends among the people, of this vicinity gathered at their home to assist them in the observance of the happy event. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson are each 72 years old.

Mr. Peterson was married in 1859 to Miss Mary Hanson at Serritsley, in Denmark. Twenty-six years ago this fall Mr. Peterson came to America, coming immediately to Jewell. He secured employment working on the railroad, and a year later sent for his wife and three children to come to America where he was making a home for them For one year Mr. Peterson was foreman of a section crew on the Northwestern railroad at Jewell, and then turned his attention to farming, renting a farm adjoining Jewell which he operated for nine years. With the proverbial thrift that makes the sturdy Scandinavians among the best and most desirable of the emigrants to America, Mr. Peterson and family prospered fairly and he and wife now own a beautiful home in town where they now reside.

Mr. and Mrs. Peterson have three children, thirteen grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, all living in addition to five grandchildren who have died. The children are Peter Thompson, Mrs. Peter Christianson and Mrs. Chris Anderson, all of whom are now residing at Jewell. Rev. Clemmensen, formerly pastor of the Danish Lutheran church, was present with his family at the affair and conducted services at the church which were largely attended. The guests presented Mr. and Mrs. Peterson some beautiful gifts as token of their regard for them. Refreshments were served and a very enjoyable afternoon spent. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson desire the Record to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the friends who so courteously helped them in so enjoyable an observance of a happy event.

A pleasing touch was added to the event by the presence of Skovgaard, the Danish violin virtuoso who was in town Thursday evening. He happened to be passing the Peterson residence while the golden wedding party was present and was invited in, partaking of the refreshments served and visiting agreeably with the guests. On departing he presented Mr. and Mrs. Peterson with tickets to his evening concert as gifts from him, and at his concert added the further favor of a Danish song played in their honor.

Findagrave.com, in Evergreen Cemetery, Jewell, Iowa, I believe has an incorrect death date for Anna (Hanson) Peterson of April 1, 1910 due to the fact that the official death record and the obituaries both give a death date of January 9, 1911. She is listed with Thomas C. Peterson as his wife, Ane Marie (Hansen) Pedersen. There is a photograph of the couple on the listing.

In addition, the children of Thomas and Anna Maria Peterson have the Thompson surname since they were born in Denmark and their surname at the time of their births was a patronymic -- their father Thomas' son and datter.
