I think this individual is actually George K. Nairn and not George K. Nearns as shown in the 1885 census. I believe that it is a misspelling.
The 1895 census and his father's (Thomas S. Nairn) obituary confirm this.

In the 1895 Hamilton County, Iowa census:
Geo K. Nairn, age 38, white, born in Dubuque County; enumerated in Webster City

Death of T. S. Nairn
The Grippe Carries Off Another Esteemed Citizen of Dubuque.

Again the messenger of death has entered Dubuque and robbed the city of one of her most trusted and beloved citizens and with sorrow was the announcement received yesterday morning that Thos. S. Nairn had ceased to live. The death of a true, good patriot and noble citizen is always a great loss to a community, but the death of Mr. Nairn is a sad blow to Dubuque. The deceased was born in Washington county, Maryland, Feb 16, 1822, where he grew up to manhood, then went to Mobile, Alabama, where he resided and in 1945 (sic) he came to Iowa, locating in Dubuque. Shortly after coming to Dubuque he entered the surveyor general's office and there remained for seventeen years, during which time he supervised the surveys of a great deal of land in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. In 1861 he went to Washington, D. C. and engaged in the drug business for five or six years. In 1867 he returned to Dubuque and engaged in the leather business and continued in it until his death, which occurred at 7 o'clock Thursday morning. For several years he was secretary of the Linwood cemetery association, and was a regular attendant at St. John's Episcopal church. In 1848 he was married to Miss Henrietta Karrick, a native of Madison county, Mo., who died some time ago. He leaves three sons and one daughter, One son, George, is a resident of Webster City. John, Joseph and Mary reside in Dubuque. A brother of the deceased lives in Washington, D. C. and has been notified. The funeral will be held from the residence on Alpine street Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. B. Walker, assisted by Rev. H. E. Most.
