In Response To: Missing Egeland (Arnstein Egeland)

This is a possibility for your missing Rasmus Egeland who may have gone by the name "Ross Egeland/Ross Egland"

In the 1915 Iowa state census, Ross Egeland, age 31, of Williams, Hamilton County, Iowa, born Norway, single, white laborer was enumerated with a notation for the Cherokee Mental Hospital as "Insane."

In the 1920 census, Ross Egland is enumerated at the Hamilton County Home in Hamilton County, Iowa with unknown age, and birthplace and listed as "Insane."

In the 1930 census, Ross Egland, born 1885 in Norway is still residing at the Hamilton County Home and listed as "Insane."

Here is an article from the Webster City newspaper:

WAS VERY HARD MAN TO HANDLE

Ross Egland Taken to the Cherokee Hospital This Morning by the Sheriff

Ross Egland, the young man residing near Williams who was examined by the board of insane commissioners yesterday and pronounced Insane, was taken to the hospital this morning by Sheriff Brown, being accompanied by his brother. The young man was very hard to handle and had to be subdued by force. He raved on the train most of the way to Fonda and there collapsed, having worn himself out. It was feared he would die. A physician was summoned, restoratives administered and the young man seemed to revive somewhat. His is a very sad case, indeed. The sheriff says he was the most difficult man to handle he ever took to the hospital and he has taken many.

There are probably records available archived at the Hamilton County Court House. It is probable that he died at the Hamilton County Home sometime after 1930. The newspaper article mentioned a brother which is another clue. If the brother's name matches and the birth dates match, this is probably the relative you are seeking. Do you have an obituary for his brother?
