DEATH OF H. H. STENBERG

Hans H. Stenberg was born at Hedamarken, Norway, the 10th day of September, 1837, and died at the home of his son, Olaf Stenberg, in Jewell, the 22nd day of March, 1920. His age at death was 82 years, 6 months and 12 days. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Norway. In the year 1866 he was united in marriage with Marie Amundrud. They emigrated to America the same year, and came to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. After a short stay in Wisconsin they came to Iowa and settled in Polk County near Polk City. They lived in Polk county until 1879 when they moved to Huxley, Story County. In 1885 they moved to Goldfield, Iowa and lived there 12 years. From Goldfield they moved to Estherville, Iowa where they stayed until about seven years ago, when they moved to Ellsworth, Iowa. Mrs. Stenberg died at Ellsworth April 21st, 1916. The last two years Mr. Stenberg has lived with his sons, Henry at Radcliffe, and Olaf at Jewell. Most of the time he has made his home with Olaf Stenberg at Jewell. He was bedfast for more than a year and went through many months of most severe suffering. This together with the fact that he was also blind for many months before his death, must have made his condition very hard to bear, but there was never a word of complaint to be heard from his lips.

He had the best and tenderest care in the home of his son which cheered and comforted him during his long and severe illness. He was a man of positive religious convictions and always took a large interest in the work of the Lutheran Church wherever he lived. Before he died he expressed his faith in the saving grace of God in Christ Jesus.

Mr. and Mrs. Stenberg were blessed with eleven children, of whom eight survive their parents, Rev. John Stenberg, Duluth, Minn.; Henry, of Radcliffe, Iowa; Mathilda (Mrs. Dan Knudson), of White Earth, North Dakota; Helen (Mrs. Olaf Eige), of Marshalltown, Iowa; Annie (Mrs. A. G. Brunsvold), Estherville, Iowa; Olaf and Casper of Jewell, Iowa; and James, of Minneapolis, Minn. Three of the children preceded the parents in death, Christine died at the age of 9; Karen, who was Mrs. Lars Dobbe, died in 1903; and Edward died at Ellsworth in 1915.

Beside the eight children surviving there are 29 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his step mother, Mrs. H. Stenberg, of Radcliffe, Iowa; and two sisters, Mrs. Marie Lilleberg, Armstrong, Iowa; Mrs. J. Severson, of Slater, Ia.; two brothers, John Stenberg, of Slater, Iowa; and Severt Stenberg, of Ellsworth, Iowa; one half-sister, Magdalene Reisem, of Lakota, Iowa; five half-brothers, Christ Stenberg, of Jewell, Iowa; Oscar, of Radcliffe, Iowa; Henry of Buffalo Center; Adolph, of Grove City, Minn., and Joseph, of Elmore, Minn.

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, March 25th, at 12:30 at the Olaf Stenberg home in Jewell, and at 1:00 o'clock at Bethesda Lutheran Church. Services were conducted by Pastor Norstad, assisted by Rev. John Stenberg, who also officiated at the grave. Interment was made in the Trinity cemetery near Radcliffe.

Long live the memory of this good man in the hearts of his large family and the host of friends and aquaintances.
