HENRY SCHLAFKE DEAD
Henry Schlafke passed away at his home three miles southwest of Jewell on Sunday, October 27th, having lived to the advanced age of 82 years, 6 months, and 12 days, before being called to his eternal rest.
Mr. Schlafke is one of the pioneers of Hamilton county, and has been a respected and leading citizen of this community for over forty years. He was born April 15, 1836, in Falkenhagen, Germany. He was united in marriage to Frederika Neuse on April 6, 1862, and to this union three children were born, Otto Schlafke, who lives near Jewell, and Mrs. Hans Jacobson, of Des Moines. One child died in infancy. Besides his two living children and wife, the deceased leaves to mourn his demise, eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mr. Schlafke was a soldier in the German army, having served in three wars, the war with Denmark in 1864, with Austria in 1866, and in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1. Becoming disgusted with militarism and autocratic rule, he came to America in 1871, and has been a patriotic American citizen ever since. Mr. and Mrs. Schlafke settled in Marshall county, where they lived for six years. In 1877 they came to Hamilton county, where they have since made their home.
The funeral services will be held at the home Thursday, October 31st, at 1:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. M. Norstad, and interment ill be made in Evergreen cemetery.
