WOMAN TRAMPLED TO DEATH BY COWS

Mrs. Maynard West Injured While Milking Last Tuesday Evening

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Maynard O. West, were held at the Bethesda Lutheran church in Jewell Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Carl Opsahl, assisted by the Rev. Hans Oppedal, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran church, officiating.

Mrs. West died Friday afternoon in the hospital at Webster City of injuries received Tuesday evening when she was kicked and trampled by a cow which she had been milking, at her home northwest of Randall.

Just how the cow became frightened is not definitely known as the animal had been milked by Mrs. West for nearly a year and was considered comparatively gentle.

When the first cow became frightened she threw herself sidewise against Mrs. West, knocking her down. The adjoining cow then became frightened and Mrs. West was rescued by her husband from underneath their feet only with difficulty.

Realizing his wife was seriously hurt he quickly carried her with the help of his son, Truman, to the house and called a doctor. On examination it was found that her entire body was badly bruised, especially her abdomen, and that there was a very severe wound on her left thigh, the flesh being torn loose in one place. That wound was filled with dirt and filth when the animals had trampled her.

Internal injuries were feared and she was immediately taken to the hospital in Webster City. No serious results were at first apprehended, however, and the wound was cared for in the best possible manner. Her condition seemed to improve somewhat and hopes were favorable, but Thursday evening an infection developed in the thigh wound which caused a condition known as oedema. She became unconscious and died Friday afternoon.

The obituary of Mrs. West will be found on the second page of this issue.

MRS. WEST WAS BORN NEAR ROSENDALE

Sena Oliva Sansgaard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John K. Sansgaard, was born in Hamilton county, near Rosendale, August 18, 1879, and died at Webster City hospital Friday, May 11, at 2 o'clock p.m., aged 50 years, 8 months and 22 days.

She grew to womanhood in this community, being baptized by Rev. Estenson, and confirmed by Rev. Swingen in the Clear Lake and Ellsworth Lutheran church.

She was married April 30, 1904, to Maynard West. To this union four children were born, two dying in infancy, Julia Amanda and Amil James.

Mrs. West is survived by her husband and two children, Truman and Alma, both at home. She leaves her father and mother and five brothers, John of Elmore, Minn., James, Selmer and Joseph of near Story City, Sverdrup of near Jewell, and three sisters, Mrs. Jacob Hoversten of near Story City and Mrs. Joseph West and Mrs. O. C. Lund of near Jewell; besides she leaves a host of friends by whom she was held in highest esteem.

Mrs. Maynard West was taken to the Webster City hospital Tuesday evening suffering from injuries so very serious that it was deemed advisable to have her under observation at the hospital until it was certain that there were no internal injuries. She had been helping milk and was knocked down and trampled on when two cows became frightened.

Funeral services were held on Mother's Day, May 11, from Bethesda Lutheran church at Jewell and she was laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery. Rev. H. O. Oppedal and Rev. Carl Opsahl officiated at the service. Songs were sung by Mrs. J. O. L. Johnson, who also sang Mrs. West's favorite song, "Mod mig der." Six of the nephews of Mrs. West served as pallbearers: Alfred West, Morrel West, Leslie Hoversten, Norman Teig, Harold Monson and Ernest Monson.

Mrs. West was conscious almost to the last and the last farewell she bid her husband and children was, "Good bye, I will meet you in Heaven."

She is sleeping in the graveyard,
Nothing can disturb her now;
Now her eyes are dim and lifeless,
Death's cold hand is on her brow.
Tho your voice is hushed forever,
And your footsteps now are still;
We shall not forget you, mother,
You shall live in memory still.
Yes we remember you; dear mother,
Just as you have always been;
You will never ring out doorbell,
Never call our roll again.
We shall never answer present,
Mother, to that roll again,
For the one who called is silent;
Low winds sing a sad refrain.
The old homestead looks so lonely
And the low winds seem to sigh
For the one who crosses its threshold
In the winter days gone by.
Down the long dim halls of memory
There are pictures on the wall;
Pictures of those childhood days, mother,
Brothers, sisters, parents, all.
