OBITUARY

Peter Mortenson

Mr. Peter Mortenson passed away at 10:00 o'clock Friday forenoon, Oct. 4th, at the home of his son, M. J. Mortenson, near Jewell. He has been in very poor health for the past four months and his advanced age made recovery impossible. Had he lived until the following Monday he would have been 89 years old.

Mr. Mortenson was born in Denmark, October 7th, 1829, and died October 4, 1918, aged 88 years, 11 months and 27th days. In December, 1858, he was united in marriage to Miss Marie Thompson and to this union nine children were born, all of whom survive except one child who died in infancy. The Mortenson family moved to this country from Denmark in 1872, and located in Hamilton county, where they have since resided. Mrs. Peter Mortenson died six years ago, and Mr. Mortenson has made his home since with his son Martin J. Mortenson, and family, near Jewell. Besides the eight children who survive him, there are twenty-nine grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.

Five of the children were present at the funeral services, Mrs. Sophia Fredrickson of Clear Lake, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Ware, of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Mr. M. J. Mortenson, of Jewell; Mrs. Minnie Larson, of Worthington, Minn.; and Mrs. Nora Paulson of Graettinger, Ia. The other children are Thomas Mortenson of Denmark; Mrs. Lena Fredriksen of Zion City, Ill.; and Mr. Pete Mortenson of Kansas City, Mo.
