Death of Thomas West

Thomas West, of Summit, S. D., a former resident near Jewell and well known to many in this community, passed away at the Lutheran hospital at Watertown, S. D., Thursday, May 22. He had been unwell for some time and early this spring suffered an accident in which his hip was broken. He had recovered from that injury, however, but was taken suddenly ill, was taken to the hospital, and died two days later. Trouble of the bladder and kidneys was given as the cause of death.

The remains were brought to Jewell and the funeral was held Monday afternoon at one o'clock at the Maynard West home and at two at Bethesda church, Rev. H. O. Oppedahl and Rev. Peder Nordsleten officiating. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery. Pall bearers were E. P. Anderson, John Sunnoe, Lars Stenson, Ole H. Olson, Wm. Olson and O. O. Westre. Songs were sung by the congregation and solos by Miss Mabel Jacobson. Among those present at the service were the brother-in-law of the deceased, Mr. Ole Olson of Harlan. At the service a letter was read from Rev. H. A. Okdale, who was with him in his last moments.

Thomas West was born at Skjold, Norway, August 18, 1848, and died at Watertown, S. D., May 22, 1924, aged 75 years, 9 months and 4 days. He came to America in 1866, and married Martha Erickson August 10, 1875. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, and ten children: Mrs. Dick Munson of Ellsworth, Henry West of Story City, M. T. and Joseph West of Jewell, Mrs. A. G. Satre of Stanhope, Mr. M. J. Teig of Radcliffe, Mrs. S. B. Teig of Nerstrand, Minn., and Thomas, Oliva and Elsie of Summit, S. D.; also one brother, John Olson of Jewell until 1906, when he moved to Summit where he had since made his home.

Many friends in this community will unite in extending condolences to the bereaved wife and family in their bereavement.
