INJURIES FATAL TO GIRL

WAS HURT IN AUTO ACCIDENT SUNDAY NIGHT

Miss Marian Kennedy, 20, Suffered Severe Fracture of Skull

WAS WITH FATHER

Condition of Mrs. Mabel Scanlon, Another Victim, Critical

Miss Marian Kennedy, 20, of Kamrar, who suffered a fractured skull in an automobile accident south of the city Sunday night, died at the hospital here last night.

The condition of Mrs. Mabel Scanlon, of Boone, another victim, whose right leg had to be amputated just below the knee, today was said to be critical by hospital attaches.

Funeral services for Miss Kennedy will be held at 2 p.m. at the Foster funeral home, Rev. O.P. Mueller, of Kamrar, officiating. Burial will be made in Graceland cemetery.

Miss Kennedy, the only daughter of R.D. Kennedy, was preceded in death by her mother. She had been a pupil in the local grade schools and was graduated in 1930 from the Kamrar high school. Until a few weeks ago she had been employed in Des Moines, but had moved to Fort Dodge where she had obtained work.

Miss Kennedy was riding with her father, R.D. Kennedy, of Kamrar, to this city Sunday evening when their car ran off highway No. 60 south of Briggs Woods. However, Mrs. Mabel Scanlon, of Boone, with her two children and a friend, Mrs. Helen McGlynn, stopped her car on the west side of the road and stepped out to give any possible aid to the Kennedys.

Just as Mrs. Scanlon alighted from her car, it was said, Miss Kennedy reached the east side of the road and started to walk to the Boone woman presumably to tell her how the accident had happened.

At that moment Charles W. Marvel, local auctioneer, drove up from the south and as he neared the scene of the accident, his car was said to have swerved some to the west, side-swiped the Scanlon car, struck the two women and knocked them down. Mr. Marvel said that he did not see either of the women in front of the car and that he stopped his machine about 50 feet beyond the Scanlon automobile.

Mr. Marvel said he got out of his car and walked back when he saw the two women lying in the road, that being the first he knew anyone had been struck. The women were taken to the hospital as quickly as possible, Mrs. Scanlon's right leg was amputated and later a blood transfusion was made.

It was pointed out today that there might have been a possibility that when Mrs. Scanlon backed her car along the highway even with that of the Kennedy car, she may have permitted the rear of her car to swing out somewhat to the center of the road. This theory was based upon the fact that the front left fender of the Scanlon car was not damaged, but from about the front left door to the rear left fender the damage was great. This would tend to show that Mr. Marvel did not swerve any great distance to the west side of the highway.
