C.L. O'Connor killed in auto mishap

Charles L. O'Connor, 63 of Forest City, a former resident of Webster City and a prominent businessman here for many years, was killed Monday in a one-car traffic accident on U.S. Highway 69 three miles north of Garner.

Members of the Iowa Highway Patrol said O'Connor was alone in his car when it hit a bridge north of Garner.

He had been engaged in the hardware business in Forest City, but for many years owned and operated the Riverside Market in Webster City and was active in the civic organizations in this community.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran church in Webster City with Rev. R.M. Roden officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery. Flag-folding services will be conducted by American Legion Post 191. The body will lie in state at the Foster Funeral home until 9:30 a.m. when it will be taken to the church.

Charles L. (Chuck) O'Connor, 63, son of Daniel H. and Rose Smith O'Connor, was born March 12, 1914 at Christal, N.D. He was reared and educated in North Dakota and Minnesota and was graduated from high school at Independence, Iowa.

He was married April 23, 1938 to Maye Louise Price, and the couple made their home in Webster City where he owned and operated the Riverside Market for 19 years. For the past six years they had resided in Forest City where he had owned and operated a Gambles store up until the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter, Dennis O'Connor of Wisconsin, Mrs. Chuck (Bridget) Frette of Webster City and Charles L. O'Connor II, Coral Gables, Fla., 12 grandchildren; his step-mother, Mrs. Dagney O'Connor of Brandon, Minn., two brothers, Bryan O'Connor of Hopkins, Minn., and John O'Connor of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Sylvia, who died in infancy.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran church in Webster City; the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Masonic lodge, the Kiwanis club of which he was a past president, the Loyal Order of the Moose and the CSP club.

He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Earnest.
