Doris Staples, 89, of Jewell died on July 10, 2023 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Doris Emma Mae Kreutner was born at the Webster City Hospital on March 24, 1934 the daughter of Floyd and Ruth (Happel) Kreutner.

Doris attended Country School at St. Paul's Lutheran in rural Boone, graduated from Stanhope High School with the Class of 1952, and Doris received her associates degree from Waldorf College in 1954.

Growing up, Doris enjoyed flying with her Dad in his Cessna 140 to see the seasons change. She loved being up in the airplane!

On August 22, 1954 Doris married Richard Staples at St. Paul's Lutheran in rural Boone. They were married for 62 years when Richard died. They were blessed with five children.

Doris enjoyed raising their family, sewing, quilting, flower gardening and floral arranging. She was a floral designer for 35 years. She was the owner of Doris' Flowers in Jewell and then delighted to work for others. Doris was "Designer of the Year" for the state of Iowa in 1993.

A very special love for Doris was dancing with her husband, Richard. They went to many polka fests and made many friends throughout Iowa and the Midwest.

"I Want to Dance with You", and "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue" were special songs!

Retirement brought more enjoyment with family as they entertained grandchildren and great grandchildren. She remained active in flower gardening. Doris started quilting at age 79, and called each quilt "Stitches of Love". She made over 40 beautiful quilts in those 10 years. Doris and Richard still danced at "jams" and at Wednesday Night in the Park at Stanhope until his death in 2016.

Doris was always ready for a game of cards and called it "therapy". Watching the seasons change, feeding the different birds, squirrels and groundhogs brought her great enjoyment. She made special memories throughout her life with family and friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Doris is survived by five children - Gina (Alan) Spohnheimer of Ames, Kendra (Dan) Owen of Waukee, Alan (Judy) Staples of New Providence, Daniel (Kerry) Staples of Winterset and Herschel Staples of Randall.

She was blessed with fourteen great-grandchildren - Victor, Claire, Kate and Ethan, Vincent, Anthony, Palma, Patricia, Luke and Landon, Cameron, Neiko, Benny and Nacho. She was blessed with two step great-grandchildren, Conner and Allie.

Doris is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews, a sister Sherry in Yuma, Arizona, old friends, and so many new friends at Eastern Star!

May God add blessings to the memories of Doris.

The Celebration of Doris' life will be Saturday, July 22 at Bethesda Lutheran church in Jewell. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The service will start at 11:00. Inurnment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell.

Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story is entrusted with the care of Doris and her family.
