Old Pioneer Died at the Home of His Niece, Mrs. H.F. Dodge - In Poor Health for Years

Amassed a Large Fortune After Coming West Fifty-Six Years Ago

Another one of the pioneer settlers of Hamilton county, whose ranks are thinning fast, passed to his reward last night. W.W. Funk, who came to Hamilton county in 1853, before the town of Webster City was thought of, died last night at the home of his niece, Mrs. H.R. Dodge. His death was due to stomach and bowel trouble with which he had been afflicted the past few years. He did not take to his bed, however, until about three weeks ago. He was 78 years of age and has been a resident of Webster City since his coming here in his early manhood.

Mr. Funk was born in Phoenixville, Penn., March 7, 1831 and lived with his parents on a farm near there until he was 22 years of age, when, together with his two brothers, J.M. and J.W. Funk, he came west. For many years he resided upon his fine 700 acre farm just southwest of the city, which he owned at the time of his death. He was a hard working man when in health and amassed a large fortune. For the past 16 years he has been in poor health and has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. H.R. Dodge. His death was expected, as he has been very feeble for some time and has been gradually failing for many days. Mr. Funk was never married and leaves no immediate relatives, his parents and brothers being all dead. No arrangements for the funeral have yet been made.
