Virginia Ann Staples, 77, Jewell, died of a heart attack Wednesday, Nov. 26 at her home. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell with Pastor Robert Williams officiating. Burial of the cremains will be held at a later date in the Cass Cemetery in Webster City.

Virginia was born on Feb. 15, 1926 in Blairsburg Township, Hamilton County to Thomas Elick and Ellen Shafer Hudson. She received her education at Blairsburg #4 School and was a 1943 graduate of Webster City High School. Virginia married George W. Staples on May 14, 1946 in Jewell. She and George farmed from 1949 to 1972, when they moved to Jewell. Virginia retired in 1988 from the ISU Library after many years of employment. She was a member of the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell and served as the chairman of the Lord's Cupboard Food Pantry since 1991. She also delivered Meals on Wheels. Virginia also served on the Elderbridge Agency Advisory Council and was a caregiver. She enjoyed reading, flower gardening and being with her grandchildren.

Virginia is survived by two daughters, Connie Carlson of Estherville and Georgia Widick of Badger; two sons, Monte Staples of Ankeny and Randy Staples of Webster City; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sisters, Darlene Ranger of Nevada and Jean Johnson of Spencer; and a brother Duane Hudson of Wooster, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband George on July 17, 2001, and a brother, Donald Hudson.

A memorial fund has been established and gifts may be sent to PO Box 154, Jewell, Iowa 50130.

Becker Funeral Home in Jewell is in charge of arrangements.
